The way you sometimes just have to block a complete stranger for being an unbearable fucking chucklefuck on someone else’s post
I keep thinking about The Kiss (as one does) and while there are a lot of great interpretations about why Henry looks so disgusted after the kiss, I think there's one that I think needs more attention — that Henry isn't disgusted with Hans, but with himself.
First, there's his reaction to putting his hand on Hans'. He stands up almost immediately, as soon as Hans smiles at him, as though he's aware he crossed a line. Then, of course, there's the kiss — sure, he pushes Hans away at the end, but when Hans pulls him into the kiss, he's all too willing, embracing Hans in return. And that's where I think his disgust comes in: he realises now that what he feels for Hans is more than that of a friend, and while Hans' affection is clear from the outside, it may not be the case from Henry's POV. For all he knows, Hans didn't mean the kiss in that way — sure, it was intense, but they're both half-mad from hunger. Hans is not in his right mind, and Henry is taking advantage. I don't even know how much Henry hears Hans' apology at first. It's only when he turns around and sees that Hans is upset too that all the pieces finally come together. Hans really does love him, the kiss really did mean something, and Henry will be damned if he runs away and loses everything.
possibly some of the funniest exchanges in kcd2 i have seen so far take place when henry is taking on a kind of quest where he is to parley or something and the quest giver really insists that henry should try his best and not kill anyone. like yes i understand that’s the game saying you will fail the objective if you decide to commit murder but i love the idea that people take one look at henry and instantly come to the conclusion that this guy could and would easily kill a man if he wanted, so they have to be assured that he will NOT do that. and in response henry nonchalantly goes “haha yeah murder would indeed make things a little awkward”. girl i would be terrified
what I love about the hansry scene is the realism of it: the dialogue option for Henry is "kiss him" but he doesn't. It's Hans who initiates everything, with the story and the confession and then the kiss. But that's the only way it would have happened. Even though they are close friends, Hans is still a noble, higher in status and better protected if discovered. It would be less risky for him than for Henry (but still risky, at least for his reputation).
I also love the shock on Henry's face, the confusion, and the time it takes him to make sense of what just happened, while Hans interprets that as a rejection and goes into full panic mode (probably my favorite part of the scene, honestly, Luke did that SO WELL).
In my mind Henry has stuffed all his feelings for Hans in a 'chivalrous devotion' folder, and he hasn't linked it to anything physical yet.
I have read a few fics where Henry is assumed gay, and I don't hate that concept if written well, but I feel like the game doesn't really support that. We don't know a lot about his relationship with Bianca, but it seems to be a first crush type of love, and he's clearly checking out Theresa in the prologue (Henry, you dog), and I feel like their relationship later on is sweet and honest. I prefer to believe Henry would not string her along.
I do think that Henry changes a lot over the course of the two games and the feelings he has for Hans run deeper, and maybe he experiences this type of love for the first time with Hans. He would likely not identify them as romantic. Judging by his reaction to the Galehaut story, he doesn't understand what Hans is trying to say, because that kind of coded language is not something he knows.
But then the payoff of the rest of the scene is so good, where he leaves and you see the gears turning, and it's HENRY, brave and clever, and probably about to die and he just goes "fuck it, that was kind of nice" and he just goes in 100%, consequences be damned.
UGH
Hans is such a good character because he is petty and jealous and good-hearted and drunk. He’s moody and whimsical and vulgar and occasionally superstitious and laughably romantic. He’s brave, afraid, arrogant and self-conscious, frequently out of the loop and simultaneously well-educated. He’s callous about some things and naive about others.
It is what makes him so frustrating and endearing, what makes him irresistible. And what makes it so easy for Henry to fall for him, as a lover and a friend.
people needdddd to wear headphones in public because while on an otherwise very lovely walk in the park today i saw a guy sitting under a tree watching a porn parody of the star wars prequels
if nothing else trying to tune out the sounds of anakin and padme going to town as i contemplate the babbling brook gave me a brief but vivid window into what it’s like to be obi wan kenobi
